7.42 Creating BBS doors
A door can be useful for storing different kinds of files in different doors. Two examples:
- A company could supply a range of different software. To offer upgrades to existing users, they could have a door for each software title, and within this door would be a list of files for this software title.
- A company that creates a password protected door for individual clients. The client logs onto the BBS, selects their door, enters the correct username and password, and then can see a list of files, made available solely to this client.
To create a new BBS door (file area), go to the the 'BBS' section within the STFax preferences and into the 'File areas' section.
Press 'add' and a new window will appear:
- Door name: - this is the name of your door, or file area, which will be listed when a caller enters the mini-BBS. The will immediately see the number of the door (or file area) and the name.
- Path: - the path for the BBS door.
- Restricted - if you tick this option, the door will require the correct username and password to be entered, before allowing access.
- Username/Password: - ener the user name and password for the door, if you have ticked 'restricted access'. The caller will be asked to enter this username and password when they select the door. If the fail to enter the correct username/password after three attempts, the mini-BBS will hangup.
- Greeting - this is the greeting that the user will see when entering
this specific door. For instance, say you have a door to download files for a
program called STFax, you could use this greeting to say something similar to
"Welcome to the STFax download area...".
This needs to be a text document, try and keep the greeting to under 10 lines
where possible.
- Menu - this is the menu the user will see when entering the door.
Each door could have different style of menu, depending on the function of the
door. You create your menu from a text file.
The menu is made up from the options available. ie. it is a menu of the files
available to download in the file area for this door.
- Uploads to: - uploads to this door (file area) will be sent to the specified account. This is useful for linking BBS uploads with specific STFax users. For instance, if Mike Smith told one of his clients to upload files to 'door 2', he could setup door 2 to send this uploads to his account.
- Messages to: - messages sent to this door willl be sent to the specified account.
